Surah tersebut mempunyai 19 ayat dan termasuk ke dalam golongan surah Makkiyah. Namanya dicatut dari kata al-A’laa atau yang paling tinggi yang disebutkan di ayat ke-1 surah ini. Muslim meriwayatkan di dalam kitab Al-Jumuaah, serta diriwatkan pula oleh Nu’uman bin Basyir dan Ashhabus Sunan bahwa di Rasulullah Saw. saat melakukan salat dua hari raya Idul Fitri dan Adha serta salat Jumat selalu membaca surah Al-Alaa di rakaat kesatu dan surah Al-Ghaasyisyah di rakaat kedua. Adapun pokok-pokok bahasan yang terkandung di dalam surah Al-Alaa, yaitu Penjelasan tentang sifat-sifat yang dimiliki Allah Swt. serta salah satu sifat yang dimiliki Nabi Muhammad Saw. Ada pula pemaparan tentang mereka yang akan memperoleh kebahagiaan di akhirat kelak; Perintah dari Allah Swt. untuk senantiasa bertasbih dengan menyebut nama-Nya. Rasulullah Saw. pun selalu ingat kepada kumpulan ayat yang dibacakan kepada beliau. Keterangan tentang jalan-jalan yang akan menuntun orang-orang sukses di dunia maupun akhirat; Allah Swt. menciptakan, menyempurnakaan ciptaan-Nya tersebut, memberikan petunjuk dan melengkapi segala keperluan untuk mencapai tujuan, serta menentukan segala kadar; Surah Al-Alaa mempunyai hubungan dengan surah Al-Ghaasyisyah seputar kaum yag beriman, kafir, serta surga dan neraka beserta penjelasannya. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden. — Saheeh International We will facilitate for you the Way of — Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran And We will ease you toward — Saheeh International So ˹always˺ remind ˹with the Quran˺—˹even˺ if the reminder is beneficial ˹only to some˺. — Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran So remind, if the reminder should benefit;1 — Saheeh International Those in awe ˹of Allah˺ will be mindful ˹of it˺. — Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran He who fears [Allah] will be reminded. — Saheeh International But it will be shunned by the most wretched, — Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran But the wretched one will avoid it — Saheeh International
